I'm hoping someone will be able to help me. I'm at a loss how to proceed with my Warwick family tree.I can find no record of my grandfather's birth and the GRO tell me there isn't one, therefore I cannot find the name of his mother. His wife's bible records his birth as 29.6.1866 at 100, Rathbone Street,Canning Town, London. His marriage and death certificates confirm the year and, according to the former, his father's name was Thomas. I've searched all the relevant censuses for father and son to no avail so I have no idea if he had any siblings, neither do my two surviving cousins, one of whom lived with him when young. There are many Thomas Warwicks to be found but without knowing who he married I can't progress. Any ideas anyone? Pat Griffiths nee Warwick.

Reg just to clarify, I asked Pat above for the names of any children her Grandfather had and she sent me a PM of her fathers name James Wallis Warwick. I told Pat how to reply on her thread so sorry about any confusion. Georgina.

You haven't given your grandfather's first name, only that of his father Thomas Warwick (or are they both called Thomas?) Have you actually seen the bible? I'm surprised that the wife would enter her husband's name and date of birth without also entering her own. Kath. x

What is the name of the person whose birth is recorded as being in 1866? I can't see it in the message....or is it my eyes?? You are aware, I hope, that registration wasn't compulsory until 1875.......... Reg

Patricia Sometimes the registrations didn't make it to the GRO so it is possible the local office may have a record of it. The only problem is that some local ROs do not issue certs for family history purposes... London boroughs being the worst offenders :( Canning Town comes under West Ham so you may be lucky......Worth a phone call! Chris

-in 1881 (before Frederick's marriage) there are only 3 such Warwicks in Essex - and only one with a father Thomas - this one (but is Farnham anywhere near West Ham? and is this Frederick elsewhere on the 1891 census?) Umm, sorry, both Frederick G born West Ham and Fred G born Farnham are on the 1891 census... Patricia, have you found Frederick in 1881 at all?

Patricia

Patricia Report 7 Feb 2007 19:27

Gosh. you've all been very busy! Well now, those Farnham Warwicks keep cropping up and yet his place of birth is always given as West Ham in the later censuses. I suppose it was possible that Thomas moved from Farnham and was in West Ham at the time of the birth and then moved back, while Frederick moved back to London later. Does that sound feasible? How can one be sure? I have investigated those at Farnham in the past and they all seemed to stay in that area as far as I could tell. However Frederick cannot be found in the 1871 census for West Ham so maybe that's what happened. I suppose the next move must be to West Ham RO to try to find the birth record and if I can't I'll have to give up. I'm very grateful to you all and I hope that if anyone does come up with anything they'll be kind enough tp contact me again. Incidentally I know about West Ham being part of Essex. I lived there myself until three years ago, when we moved to Zuffolk at the age of seventy-seven. Not a good move as far as Family Trees are concerned! Regards to all, Pat.
