I have noticed recently that there is some confusion about what is needed when posting the address for a web site. Basically, Genes will block any web address after c o or com. It does NOT block any other dots and there is no requirement to replace these dots with stars or bracket them. The only requirement is to star or bracket the dots BEFORE c o or com. ie this works because no c o or c o m http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ This wont www.genesreunited.co.uk ............. Therefore replace the . with star or bracket it www.genesreunited*co.uk www.genesreunited(.)co.uk www.ancestry*com www.ancestry(.)com Hope this helps sort the confusion, and make it easier to post a web site address. Cheers and happy posting Keith PS nearly got me lol. |

Hi Keith, its like batting your head against a brick wall. I am afraid its a force of habit with many posters.. Your tip also works with .gov or .org I have been caught out in plain language I sometimes separate things with............. thats ok but if company, computer or similar follows...........it disappears....LOL Bob |

To be honest I am not sure, just policy, possibly to prevent competition websites being posted or advertising reasons? |

(a) include an email address, postal address, phone number, the address of any website, or any other information which is intended to facilitate direct communication, in material which is posted on the Genes Reunited Service. Full Members and the recipients of their emails can share this information, should they wish, once direct contact has been made; (b) place material on, or otherwise use, the Genes Reunited Service for any business or commercial purpose; or (c) use access to the Genes Reunited Service, or information gathered from it, for the sending of unsolicited bulk email (sometimes known as spam). |

In fact as long as there is never a d o t preceding the letter c you are ok. e.g. website.)co.uk Bob is correct, although GR don't appear to mind as long as the site addresses are connected with research and are not commercial |

If I want to put in a ...horror of horrors...'commercial link' I can still do so, such as www.flowersongraves.)com ? (just made it up) This is really stupid and time-wasting and should be abolished immediately. In many years of surfing the web this is the only site that uses such pathetic restrictions. Even if 1% of posts had a 'commercial link' , which I doubt, so what; why penalize the other 99% of users by unecessary inconvenience. |

Hi Alistair, Yes, the restriction on posting website addresses irritates me too. You are trying to help people on here and sometimes having to stop and put asterisks or brackets in web addresses is a bloomin' nuisance especially as on other family history forums you don't have to worry about such rules! :-( Cheers, Horatia |
