Hi Again Ann Just checked with the library (can do that on line at least!). They have something called National Probate Calendar,1858-1935, is that something similar to the Index or what? Liz

Thanks Ann. I'll try our main library, they've lots of genealogical reference books - a whole section in fact, so hopefully should have something. Liz

Ann. Is it possible to look through the Index on line? I can't seem to get anywhere with it. Liz

Sorry, no it's not on line. It may be available at a large library near you, or perhaps someone on the site might look it up for you. I could do it for you but it wouldn't be for a couple of weeks. Just let me know.

If he may have left a will, it's much quicker to look through the National Probate Index than to go though the GRO death index.

thanks all - sorry have been off the puter for a couple of days - family emergency!!!!! yes the date is 1879 - sorry - I do have his birth cert and his marriage cert to Ada. I also have her death cert and his son Edward, my grandfathers, marriage cert. As far as I am aware he did not remarry, and anyway that wouldn't change his name so I should stil be able to find a death for him surely?? Anyone any other ideas thanks Looby

Its just the death cert we are looking for isnt it? Have we confirmed date of birth yet? It is possible he remarried and didnt take the kids with him.

looby, can you check your dates please? I don't think you mean he was married at 3 years old do you? By the way, if you go on to the East Of London Family History Society http://www.eolfhs.org.uk/surnames/surres.asp?Surname=BUTT There are a couple of people researching the Butt family name.

Have I read the information wrong. Edward born 1897 had a son Edward in 1901? Maureen

Heather Report 22 Feb 2007 17:59

LOL, I just noticed that too when I came to have a re read to see if I could find him. Perhaps the numbers are transposed? 1879?

Hi Heather Think it unlikely he lived much longer than that - the family info is a bit scant and as the only other living rellies on that side are a two second cousins of 70 and 76. the story is that after their mother died my grandfather, the eldest, 'looked after' the younger ones. One of my remaining 2nd cousins is the daughter of the youngest son who was only 5 when his mum died and the youngest sister was only 3. I know that when my grandad married in 1924 both his youngest brother and sister were living with him and continued to live with him and his new wife for several years after. This is what leads me to the assumption that Edward Henry Thomas didn't live very long after WW1 - nobody seems to have any recollection of him or of memories of him. regards Looby

Well he isnt listed on the CWGC as a war casualty. He could have lived a lot later than 1925 though couldnt he! If he were born 1897 then in theory 1980 wouldnt be outrageous.

Can anyone find a death reference for me – have looked everywhere I can think and have trawled Ancestry from 1918 to 1925!!! I am looking for a death ref for my great grandfather Edward Henry Thomas Butt – he was born 27th August 1897(have cert) Kingland Islington London. He married Ada Florence Latter 4th June 1900 (have cert). My grandfather was born 26th March 1901 – also Edward. On Ada’s death cert in 1918 he is shown as ‘house decorator now soldier’, so presume he joined up during WW1 and was still away at this time. My grandfathers marriage cert shows him as a ‘wood worker’ but doesn’t state if he is deceased or not (22nd June 1924) I have absolutely no knowledge of him from the time of Ada’s death cert, but can’t seem to find him anywhere – anyone any ideas? Any info gratefully received although I may have to go offline for a while shortly. Regards Looby
