I am wondering how to go about starting to look for my great grandad whose name was Dominic MacDonald and all I know is that he had died by 1911. He was definitely a merchant seaman.

I would start with this website... http://www.red-duster.co.uk/chart%20room.htm

Hi There are these possibilities on Scotlandspeople?: 1 1872 MCDONALD DOMINIC M 22 CALTON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 2 1906 MCDONALD DOMINICK M 55 ANDERSTON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 3 1875 MCDONNOCH DOMINIC M 25 GREENOCK OLD OR WEST /RENFREW You'd need to go on the site and buy some credits (minimum £6 for 30 credits) to look at these in detail. You might also want to check out census records on the same site. Denis

Nudged up to go with new thread asking for Greenock area help. Did you follow up on any of the possible marriages that have been mentioned on this thread? Maureen

How do you nudge things? Yes I followed up on them all. The middle one seemed the most hopeful but there is nothing that jumps out at me and says 'This is the one'

That sounds very encouraging. What do I do next? Is it a subscription thing? How would I find out if he sank with his ship?

Hello Pandora The info is from here CLIP (Crew List Index Project) is a dataset containing details of seafarers and vessels details taken from the Crew Lists and Agreements from 1863 to 1913. This data is fully searchable by seafarer or vessel, listing forename / initials, surname, place and year of birth and age, age at voyage and vessel sailed on. What I have posted is all the info there is on him there. Kindest regards Maureen
