An Ellen Shephard born 5/4/1873 is listed. I found her on the 1901 census with 2 children but she is a widow. I'm fairly certain she married William Robert Shephard JFM 1894 Newcastle 10b 136. He died JFM 1900 Newcastle 10b 39. On freebmd (via ancestry) 2 males and only 1 female are listed. I think Ellen is the missing female. Question is without ordering the marriage cert is there another way to find out the missing person on this page ??? Sorry this is long winded. T.O.R. xx

Well there were 21 Ellens born Newcastle in June quarter 1873 so I suppose you could check each one on the complete marriage register and see if one of them matches with the page number and district! Bit long winded - or you could try Family Relatives site which you have to pay for - can't think of any other alternative apart from sending for one of the children's birth certs. Good luck June

Of course the only way to be sure is to buy the marriage certificate. But working on the idea that the page number might have been mistranscibed, which they sometimes are these are all the Ellen's transcribed by FreeBMD with all the other details correct except page number. If you check the image for Ellen Burgess you will see that the middle number is half missing, I can not tell if it should be a 5 or it might just be a 3. If you go onto FreeBMD and just put first name ELLEN, click the box for Newcastle upon Tyne and then enter the year, it will show you all Ellens born in that year. Georgina.

June which site did you find the 21 Ellens on. Every site I use seems to want the surname as well ?? I might recognise surname if there is a connection. T.O.R. ;o))

i tried this method yesterday to find a marriage and it worked for me. i've just looked up all Ellen's married March 1894 in Newcastle on Tyne. one entry, Ellen Burgess, is vol 10b page 156. when i looked at original image, the print of page number is slightly erased. it looks more like page 136 to me, the same page number as your William Robert shephard. Therefore, assuming that you've got the correct marriage date, it looks likely that your Ellens maiden name is Burgess.

Ellen Burgess being transcribed as 156 does give this group one too many women though, but of course there could be a man waiting to join them.
