Jane Gateshead Girl Report 22 Mar 2007 18:14

Thanks again mary - had gone to bed by the time you posted your last 2 messages - I don't have any Ancestors in Australia apart from the Beard's, I only have a great Uncle James Cannon - I did manage to get his war records from Archives & death etc but they are the only ones I have so am very rusty on Australian sites. I did look at the father's war records - it was amazing that he was wounded and wanted to go back only to be wounded again. I also note that Edwin Noel was a prisoner of war - not sure where. Mum seems to think it was german but my other rellie James Cannon was a Japanese prisoner of war so not too sure. I have contact National Archive to see how I go about getting the records and an awaiting a reply Once again BIG Thanks! Jane

You're very welcome, Jane - there's a lot of good information on Australian sites. Did you look at Susie's husband's service record? He was seriously wounded at Gallipoli, discharged as unfit, and re-enlisted when he recovered - what a glutton for punishment! There's a letter on file from Edwin Noel describing himself as the oldest son, so there were evidently more children.

I read somewhere that Freemantle was entered as destination port as it was the first port of call in Australia (bit like immigration at Heathrow) They usually got back on the ship and sailed round to other cities such as Melbourne and Sydney. Cheers Gerry

Can't see anything in NSW. Can't find anything useful in the online index for Western Australia, but it isn't very good. Try asking Cherilyn McMeekin if she can find a marriage or death for Susanna, or children with surname Beard and MMN Watson, in the thread on the Records Office board entitled *BMD lookups offered for Victoria, NSW & Western Australia*.

There's quite a good match in Western Australia; a Susanah Beard died in 1946 aged 66, which would make her dob around 1880: http://www.mcb.wa.gov.au/NameSearch/details.php?id=KB00080250

There are a couple of hits in Victoria for the death of a Susanna Beard after 1901, but no hits if you add her parents' names. It's a pay-per-view site, and there's a small fee to view the record. Might be worth having a look, in case it is her but her parents' names weren't recorded on the death cert. http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/servlet/IdxSearch?action=getHistIdxSearchCriteria

I am trying to find when my great aunt went to Australia: Her name was Susannah (Susie) Watson born 1879 Stockton, Co Durham, I have her in 1901 census in this country so it will be after that time. She also married some one called Beard but not too sure whether this was before or after entering Australia. I know its not much to go on but any ideas or even places to search would be greatly appreciated. regards Jane
