Sorry Heather been away. Yes it means software firewalls like Zone Alarm. The Nvidia one is built in to the Network Adaptor so it filters and block stuff before it gets to your PC just like a router. It's like your internet provider stopping spam before it gets to you and having spam filters on your PC. They are at different points in the flow. Two software firewalls are working in the same 'room'. 'NVIDIA Firewall technology may be used as a powerful baseline policy enforcer. For full protection, users should augment the protection of the NVIDIA Firewall with leading antivirus and intrusion detection (firewalls etc Bob) software, which will help them achieve the best total PC security solution.' Oh Bob - just downloaded that Comodo and its is telling me to uninstall any other firewalls. So I have aborted. Any advice please?

no i don't have that software, if it's there,i have'nt put it there, i had my PC repaired before Christmas last year,had to have a new hard drive, but my ZA also used to give the same message as yours! Chris.

Hi Chris, They're software used for downloading torrents. Usually used for downloading films, music etc. :-) My Zone Alarm kept tuning itself off and giving me the message 'True Vector services has closed down'. It took a lot of Googling before I found the problem. The solution was even more of a nightmare because the 'uninstall Zone Alarm' facility doesn't actually uninstall everything and then you have a major problem trying to install another version! Sorry but I would most certainly NOT turn off the Nvidia firewall. It contains some very impressive features. http://www.nvidia(.)com/object/nforcead.html Watch the video. Very impressive. Hardware firewalls act in series to the PC, ie. they do their stuff before it reaches the PC . They won't clash. Nor do hardware firewalls go 'out of date' in the same fashion as software ones. Bob

Hi Chris, You never answered my question about peer-to-peer software? The only reason I asked is that the newer versions of Zone Alarm have a known conflict with this type of software and the only way to currently get around it until Zone Alarm fixes it is to install an older version. Sharon

thanks for your replys, i did turn windows firewall of when i had ZA, but it did'nt make a lot of difference, but i have WF turned on again now. Chris.

I have been using ZoneAlarm Pro on my networked computers for years and it has never caused any problems, however, as others have said, you should only have one firewall running on your computer at a time. You must definately turn off the Windows XP firewall if using ZoneAlarm. Also disable any firewall included with your motherboard. The motherboard firewall is now probably very out of date. If you are using Broadband your modem or router will have what is known as a NAT firewall which will catch most intrusion attemps. Remember that the Windows XP firewall only blocks incoming attacks, ZoneAlarm also prevents unauthorised or malicious software from making outgoing calls. Also did you have the latest version of ZoneAlarm. A new version was only released within the past 24 hours. Maybe a fresh install will fix your problem.

Heather the motherboard ones are like the 'hardware' ones found in routers. Most of these don't block outgoing threats though. You can use software firewalls like ZA along with these and this is recommended. I have found ZA a problem in the past and have been using Comodo for months. It has great reviews. Like all firewalls you have to do a fair bit of 'allowing' at first but otherwise it's been very good. And free for ever Bob

I used to have avg anti virus and zone alarm and I have to say occasionally zone alarm would be a problem. Ive now found out that my own mother board provides a firewall (local pc shop told me during a repair!) and I have that on. Nvidia. I dont know if all motherboards are supposed to have these, local pc geek reckons so.

I'd agree with above, your ZoneAlarm was conflicting with your Windows Firewall. You are not supposed to have both running at the same time, causes all sorts of problems. You only need one firewall, if it is a good one, and yes ZoneAlarm is a very good firewall, even the free edition.

Have had Zone Alarm for years and just upgraded to version 7. never any probs. You werent using Windows Firewall at same time as Zone Alarm were you?. Its not advised. Gerry :-))
