Hi I am planning a visit to London Metropolitan Archives and never having been there before can anyone offer me some tips please? I’m hoping to find some medical records for an inmate in St. Luke’s Hospital , Old St, London in the 1890’s. Do I have to book a place in advance? What am I allowed to take with me? etc. Many thanks Lyndsey

If you Google 'London Metroplitan Archives' their website is good. Check out link 'Before you visit' and their information leaflets, there's a good one to download for first time visitors. The staff are very helpful, don't be afraid to ask! They hold introductory sessions that last a couple of hours every couple of months and I found that quite helpful, again info on website. You need to book for that but not for any ordinary research. Take lunch with you! Very little in the way of refreshments at LMA itself. Enjoy! Sue

LMA have given me the reference numbers of some files I need to ask for when I visit them next week , however, they then go on to say that not all of their material has been catalogued and that I should provide them with 48 hours notice for access to it. My question is how do I know what information hasn’t been catalogued in order to request it in advance? Thanks Lyndsey
