Hi all. Please can anyone help me choose family tree software. It would be great to have a thread where people review the software they have and say what the good and bad points are. Also, if anyone else has a wish list for their ideal family tree software, post it here - maybe someone enterprising could make it happen! Personally, I would like software that emables me to... Easily input information, edit and add notes. I like the current Genes Reunited format, but would love something which made it more like a scrap book. Print off a family tree easily (which looks like a family tree, not a list.) Share small, easily selected information by email, without giving people full access to all the tree, any photos and option of automatically removing all living relatives or unverified material. |

There have been loads of threads where people recommend software. Personally I use Family Tree Maker but use the search facility and you should find the threads. Sam x |

You can enter family tree software in the search box at the top of this page and bring up dozens of threads on this. Majority of us seem to have Family Tree Maker - you can buy it direct from ancestry or twr computing and get a free 30 days or more on ancestry with it for about £12 at the mo I think. GR is totally rubbish compared with FTM - you can add photos, videos, music, time lines, images, make reports, trees, books - create your own internet home page, easily add or remove people, add notes, descriptions, back it up to cd or internet storage - tons of stuff - just get it and you will see. You can make a gedcom of any work you have put on here and then import it into the FTM. twr or my-history websites will give you comparisons of software. |

You can download a free beta version of Family Tree Maker 2008 from Ancestry*com or google Family Tree Maker 2008. I have been messing around with it and it is a lot different than the earlier versions, most things are on view at once on different parts of the screen, some people may prefer the older versions but for me it makes it easier to keep track of. Think the full version is out later on this month. Download it and try before you buy, its free. Marilyn |
