Thankyou so much for all the replies. Unfortunately I got kicked off my machine after posting my last message so sorry for the delay. I am so confused with this fella as he is on the 1851 census as William Backsta, mother Mary Masterman. However, in 1861 Mary is on with her son Henry Masterman, same birth year as William. I wonder if he is going under his middle name. I got Henrys birth cert but his parents are down as John and Margaret who are actually his grandparents (I think!). Basically I'm trying to find out if this lad was Marys son and what happened to him !! Cheers, I'll post a bit more later on tonight as I'm actually at work. Marie xxxx

Can't find anything under Baxter. I'm not sure he would have been registered actually as his mother is down as unmarried and only 24 so she must have had him out of wedlock at 18. Frowned upon in those days I guess.

Have you tried under Baxter? Also it wasn't compulsary to register a birth until 1875 so he may never have been registered. Sam x
