Hi Jill, I'm pretty certain she may well of remarried. This is a problem part of the family. It appears as though without any form of state aid the only support people had was through marriage. If a partner died then the other partner often remarried without too much of a delay. A Mary Ann Smith (Neath Abbey c1838) married a George Newberry (Chepstow c1831) in Pembrokeshire 1859 (I have the MC). They had one daughter, Ann born 1860 (I have the BC). Ann died in the Union Workhouse, Swansea aged 9 of something very similar to malnutrition as stated on the DC. So I know I have the right family and for this family the last known confirmed address on Ann's DC was Swansea. The witness named on the certificate was her father George. The 1871 Wales census shows a Mary Ann Newbrey (Neath Abbey) living with her daughter Esther Newbrey c 1864 (Birkenhead) in Swansea. Freebmd shows an Esther Newberry c1864 Birkenhead There are too many coincidences for it not to be the Mary Ann Newberry I'm searching for. Another part of the puzzle is where did George disappear to? Many thanks Paul

Hi Reggie, Not that I am aware of; however the Esther Jane you refer to was born in Cardiff and did marry John McEwan Smith. The Swansea Esther is a new lead for me. Many thanks Paul

Hi Paul Was it possible that Mary Ann remarried? Looking at 1891 Wales census - searching under Mary - born Neath - living Swansea - born 1838. There are one or two possibles but different surnames - can't see a likely mistranscription ... Jill

Hi, I'm having trouble trying to find a Mary Ann Newberry (nee Smith c 1838) and her daughter Esther Newberry c 1864. They are mistranscribed in the 1871 Wales census as Newbrey and are living in Swansea where Mary Ann says unmarried. The name is often mistranscribed but I have tried Newbrey, Newberry, Newbery, Newbury and cannot locate either of them after 1871 census. Mary Ann was born in Neath Abbey, Glamorganshire Esther was born in Cheshire. Any help would be appreciated. The 1871 census record is:- RG10; Piece: 5455; Folio: 48; Page: 6 Many thanks Paul
