Hi Heather Yes that's what I was thinking hence my searching for her to see if anything about her could provide a clue, but she seems to be as elusive as my Henry :-) It just seems strange to me for her to take in a boarder when she is only 22 and unmarried. He states his father as John Rose (dec'd) occ. Glassmaker on his marriage cert. but like I said - no trace of a John Rose glass maker with a son Henry on 1861 etc. Mary

Hi Caz, Thanks for taking the time to look for me, I appreciate it. Mary

I wonder if researching the young lady he was staying with in Wales (assuming this is def him) would be fruitful at all? Who was his dad named as on the marriage cert and his occupation?

Hi Mary, Like I said the Rose branch of my tree has caused me several sleepless nights so I checked mine to see if I had a boy who disappeared but unfortunately I don't. From my research I know there was a large concentration of Rose families in and around the Birmingham area so searching the census records for that area might be an idea but it will be a mammoth task although I think if he was a runaway from a family, employer, workhouse etc. I think he would probably made a name up. It's sad to think of a little boy of that age on his own though isn't it. If I come across anything that might help you in the course of my digging up Roses I'll let you know. Good luck. Caz

Sorry for not replying last night - OH decided to go to bed early and I had to turn pc off. Heather, Henry Rose is my gg grandfather and he is a serious brickwall, just can't find out anything about him. On 1881 census (which is the 1st one I can find him on) he says he was born West Bromwich 1855. I paid for 3 hour search of parish registers but nothing coming up for him there....unless he lied about his father's name! Caz You're right...Henry may not be his real name at all, but it's what he used when he married so it's all I've got. Mary

Hi Mary, I've just checked my tree to see if I have a Henry because I've got a family of Roses who were not good at registering births but I don't sorry. Are you certain his name was Henry Rose? Could it just be a name he made up if he was a runaway perhaps? Sorry I couldn't be more help, I know how frustrating it can be. I have an Elizabeth Rose born in Stratford upon Avon who disappears after 1881. Caz

Im just wondering if mum remarried or something and he got sent to relations in Wales? How does he fit in with your family?

Contrary Mary

Contrary Mary Report 4 Apr 2007 22:43

No Heather, that Henry Rose in Liverpool is deffo not him sorry.

Contrary Mary

Contrary Mary Report 4 Apr 2007 22:37

Sorry Heather, he's on 1881 transcribed as Henry Roe, Iron Turner with his wife Annie in Derbyshire. They married in 1879 and on his marriage cert he gives his father as: John Rose (dec'd) Glass Maker. Having spent a long long time searching for a John Rose - Glassmaker and not finding one, at least not one with a son called Henry, I'm beginning to think the fathers name was ummm made up :-) but not knowing his mothers name either really makes it so difficult. I think this Henry Roose could be my missing Henry Rose, do you think the church would have kept records of money paid for his board? Mary

The Henry Rose born 1850 Liverpool who is well documented in the censi is def not your bloke I take it? Could you tell us where he fits in with your lot so that may give some clue?

No, I've even gone through the complete BMD's for Rose and Roose +/- 2years but none for Liverpool. Mary

Heather

Well no Henry Rose leaps out of the freebmd born Liverpool does he? Hmm.

Hi Heather I've never been able to find Henry Rose on any census prior to 1881. Story goes that he 'arrived on his own aged about 10 in Wales and was taken in by a family there' no-one know from where though. this entry looks as though it could possibly be him. I don't know who would be paying for his board and keep - just guessing that it might be the local church, cos I can't think who else would, if that makes sense. Have absolutely no idea at all of his mothers name which doesn't help I know. Mary

Heather Report 4 Apr 2007 22:02

There is no Roose right age anywhere I take it? Could you elaborate on why you think the church would be paying for his board? If not, does the Baulkley name feature at all in his parentage - mums name or an auntie or anything? Where is he 10 years later?

Hi Jeanette Yes I noticed that too and thought it was strange. I've looked in the BMDs for her but can't find her so I wonder if she actually really is a Hughes daughter. What I found most odd though is that Henry should be boarded with an unmarried woman. Mary

Hi all I've found an entry which could possibly be my very elusive Henry Rose. It's 1861 Wales census RG9, piece 4366, folio 28, page 19. He's shown as aged 8 born Liverpool living as a boarder with an Elizabeth Baulkeley aged 22 unmarried (which seems a bit strange). Anyway, I'm assuming that the local parish church would be paying for his board - would that be right? Also, if that is right, does anyone know how I would find out that information, would I need to find the churches in the area and approach them or would the info be held elsewhere? Thanks very much for any help in advance. Mary
