Allan - The three children (including Ralph) are children of the same Ralph and Mary Oakes - I just found his two sisters that fill in the gap between Ralph and the children baptised in Chester. It could well be that the member of the LDS is right in thinking Mary Smith married your Ralph Oakes - but the only marriage I could find (and in vaguely the right area) was Mary Butterton. Hi - thought there might be a few other children to 'fill in the space' between 1767 and the first known Christening in Cheshire - and here they are! I also found an entry for Ralph which is an extracted entry (as are the others) rather than the submitted one (where there is a danger of over-enthusiasm). The submitted one though, did have a maiden name for Mary. Don't know how close Norton in the Moors is to Burslem but found this on familysearch:- Spouse: MARY BUTTERTON Family Marriage: 29 JAN 1764 Norton In The Moors, Stafford, England 1. TERESA OAKES - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 18 OCT 1772 Burslem, Stafford, England 2. RALPH OAKES - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 19 MAY 1767 Burslem, Stafford, England 3. ANN OAKES - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 04 FEB 1770 Burslem, Stafford, England Victoria |

In my experience it's unlikely to have the mother's maiden name in records as early as that....some baptisms have only the father's name, infact, but churches vary. Why not tell us their names and the church and see if people can help. Joan |

hi...bit of advice needed....i may go to a church today,to see where a lot of my late 1700/early 1800`s ancestors are buried....i have definite details of my gggg grandfathers babtism at this church, and i have his parents names(not his mothers maiden name)...does a church babtism/birth certificate from this era have the mothers maiden name on it....according to cheshire records,i`m certain that this couple came from another county, not cheshire....how can i find out where they came from,if its not on a babtism/birth cert....the earliest babtism of their 1st born is 1776 at this church........regards.....allan |
