Hi Just to clarify - it does depend on wether the person getting married gives all their names of course, but a Marriage Certificate should state all the names, all of mine who were widows give both their names.....for instance my grandmother (on her second marriage to my Grandfather) on her marriage certificate is 'Edith Ellen Simmons formerly Whitney' and the other 6 marriage certificates I have of women who have been Widowed have the same format Current Name and Formerly Maiden Name. (As Anne says it will say her status at time of marriage also) As I said - if the person getting married does not give this information it will not be on the certificate..... Gail. x

The birth certificates are the ones which say (for example) late Jones, formerly Smith. I can confirm that the marriage cetificates I have which are second marriages only say the name the woman had at the time of the marriage. However it would say if she was a spinster or a widow. Always assuming she did not lie to the vicar!! Anne

I have the marriage cert of my grandmother's second marriage. It does not state her maiden name. Her name is given as it was at the time of the marriage, which of course, was her first husband's name. It doesn't state any other name as in 'formerly' or 'previously'. I think you will have to rely on her father's name being on the marriage cert to get her maiden name. Or get her first marriage cert which will give her maiden name.

Were there any children to Herbert Riggall and Catherine Parker? If so their birth certificates should have on as mother's name ..Catherine Riggall, late......?........, formerly......?...... The name after the word formerly will be her maiden name. Kath. x

Marriage cert should give you the name of her father. Jay

That marriage certificate should state all her names, ie 'Smith formerly Jones' . You need the marriage certificate as the children should be registered under her 'maiden name' but her marriage should be under her 'current' name... Gail. x
