I've received a death certificate for my grandads' first wife and it gives his occupation as something that looks like SATTALON I have looked at several different websites giving lists of jobs within the collieries but I can't see anything that looks similar. The first five letters are definitely SATAL it is the last three letters I am not sure of because of the flourishes in the line above. Can anyone suggest what this might be please. Many thanks Caz

Hello , Caz , The nearest I can find on Durham Mining Museum website beginning with 's' is Stallman ..ie. a man in charge of a 'stall or workplace' underground...1890s.. regards , Joyce...

Thanks for your interest Joyce. It isn't stallman the first five letters are S A T A L it's the ones that come afterwards I'm not sure of, the handwriting has lots of flourishes and the letters from the line above obscure the last three letters. I've looked at several sites which mention jobs within the colliery which came up on google but there's nothing even remotely similar. It's driving me mad. Caz

Could it perhaps be 'sat alongside'? I seem to remember seeing something about mining, and I believe its where perhaps a miner, perhaps in a very small tunnel, or enclosed space would have had a buddy along with him as a type of assistant?

Hi David, thanks for that. Although I don't think it's that because the word is not long enough and it is one word not two it might well be a derivative of that, in colliery slang perhaps. I'm quite excited now because the more I look at it the more likely it seems. I can't thank you enough it really has been driving me crazy. Thanks again Caz
