Soldiers discharged to pension up to 1854 are indexed by name on the National Archives website. Your man isn't there, which means that either he wasn't discharged to pension, his papers are lost or they are in the 'misfiles' which aren't indexed on the Catalogue. If you know his regiment you can still follow his career by looking at Muster rolls and other series at Kew. |

Hi Thanks a lot both of you for helping. I got the recruitment sergeant information of his marriage record, in Sedbergh Parish Records, but have searched all Sedbergh and surrounding areas for his birth, also Settle. I will investigate the microfilm records, are the ones they hold at the centres different to on the internet?? He was in the First Yorkshire West Riding Regiment and I found a web site that says about what a recruitment sergeant did at that time, in that regiment, I sent them an email, maybe something will come of it. Thanks again Marilyn |

I guess you got info from the IGI? It is a submitted record, so you need to double check it but it may be worth you contacting your local Family centre for the LDS and asking to view the film that is mentioned. Where did you find the info about him being a recruiting sergeant?? Thats really a nice piece of history. You know the regiment then? Kew holds army records. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Abraham Nowell Male Family -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: About 1769 Of, Settle, Yorkshire, England Christening: Death: Burial: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages: Spouse: Mary Preston Family Marriage: 08 SEP 1794 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Messages: Record submitted by a member of the LDS Church. The record often shows the name of the individual and his or her relationship to a descendant, shown as the heir, family representative, or relative. The original records are not indexed, and you may have to look at the film frame-by-frame to find the information you want. A family group record for this couple may be in the Family Group Record Collection; Archive Section. (See the Family History Library Catalog for the film number.) These records are alphabetical by name of the father or husband. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source Information: Film Number: 1239535 Page Number: 1573 Reference number: 32993 |

Please could anyone tell me is there anywhere I could find army records for 1794 in Settle Yorkshire. I have an ancestor Abraham Nowell who was a recruiting sergeant at Settle when he married in 1794, (although he married in Sedbergh), and I am looking to find out where he was born. I knowhe was born about 1763 and I have searched Sedbergh and surrounding areas and also Settle, but havehit a brick wall. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks a lot Marilyn |
