I have recently got a marriage cert for a William Pethers and Rachel Plumridge 1862. Everything adds up apart from the name of the father William has given. I expected to find his father to be Elisha Pethers, as this is what i gained from the census and various other contacts. But, the name Thomas Pethers (Labourer) is stated. Now Elisha died in 1842, and was in a workhouse in 1841. Would William have put a random name down because he DIDN'T know Elisha's name? Or is it likely that 'Thomas' was his father, and he was a nephew or relative of Elisha? I have yet to find William (born c1835, Kensington) in 1841 but i'll post the info for 1851. Thanks, Liz.
