The parish register for the baptisms may record that they were twins. I sent to a Register Office for the birth certificate of a child, who I thought may have been a twin and said in my short letter that I was hoping to establish whether he was a twin. Very helpfully with the certificate came a Register Office slip saying, NB. Daniel was a twin. Gwyn

Have you looked for other female forenames in the appropriate quarter? Perhaps she was registered Mary Frances etc but known in the family as Frances? Jay

I would contact the Register Office covering the area where the event took place, give them all the details of the certificate you have received and explain the other birth is missing in the GRO Index, they should then be able to produce the other certificate for you. I would also explain that both chidren appear on the census. Jennifer

Hi. Would it be possible to send for the birth/cert, using the Frances instead of Francis??? Or will that not work?? helen

Given the similarity of the names, it is more than likely that the second entry was overlooked when the index was created. Jennifer

If I was you I would ask the local registry office to search for the birth (Im taking it that you ordered the other through the GRO), perhaps hers just didnt get to the GRO many events didnt.

Yes if there is a time, then its a twin or should I say that it shows that there was more than one baby born alive at the birth.

Well if the certificate you have for Francis matches up with everything, then the only thing I can think of is that they just registered the one, perhaps the girl was sick? It wasnt compulsary to register a birth before 1875.

You can usually spot twins because they have the same page number etc...Unless they were entered at the bottom of the page and the other twin is recorded on the next page. However I have been tripped up by this before and thought I had a few twins, same page numbers etc but it turns out they were cousins. What makes you think that they were a twin?

Who gave you the info? Wouldn't it be a little strange giving two twins the same name? Sam x
