Sorry Maureen I didn't make myself very clear. I have Joseph How on several census and the 1861 gives 52 West St, Mile End Old Town as the Jolly Sailor...given Joseph's occupation as a beerhouse keeper, I'm assuming this is the name of the pub. What I'm trying to find out is if the street still exists (war time bombing?) and maybe if there is still a pub at that address. Sylvia

Hello Sylvia, there's some interesting stuff on the site London Public Houses dot com , plus I also suggest google the address, when i did that with my 1881 coffee shop, it turned out now to be a licensed premise with annex rated floor show lol !!! This part of London was very colourful and apparantly still is! Heather

Thanks Heather Sorry sleep intervenes a bit when you're in NZ. Thanks for the website. I have managed to find Joseph How mentioned as a Publican, but no trace of the Jolly Sailor. Which is maybe a bit odd as Joseph was running it for at least 30 years from 1861-91. I've been trying to get into Historical Directories, but cannot get into the site...nothing new with my pc! Does anyone live in the area please? Sylvia

The only 'Jolly Sailor' public house that I could find was at 8 Garnet Street, London, E1. Alan

This is the 1871 entry Please tell me I'm not imagining things :-( I would think that even though it might not have the same name, if the building still exists it would still be a pub...??? In 1881 Joseph How was a Beer house Keeper. Not a publican as such - sold beer from his residence, which was 52 West Street, Mile End Old Town. Google 1881 pubs and put in the name 'How'. maggie

Beer house keepers didn't just sell from a private house, but kept public houses with bars/rooms where people drank. Your ancestors premises are quite likely to have had a name even if it wasn't recorded on the census. 'Beer houses' were premises licensed for the sale of beer as opposed to those which were licensed to sell spirits as well as beer.

This is 1910, so this can't be your Joseph, but did his son Joseph take over the business - he's listed as a publican..? How Joseph Wm, 28 Barnslet Street, Bethnal Green E
