Dates on Marriage certificates - Incorrect?

Do you know that the date / day is incorrect? Weddings can take place any day of the week. |

Have just checked date on Marriage certificate 1st Apr 1891 and found that it is a Wednesday. has anyone come across incorrect dates, or was it usual for weddings to take place midweek? Ann |

I'm not sure if correct or not, but question has arisen because census took place on 5th April and William (without wife) is still living with parents |

Ah yes, I have seen someone who was at home on the census with parents ... but shouldn't have been because he should have been with his wife! |

Ann, At that time it would have been normal for a marriage to take place on any day of the week. Saturday was not preferred over the others and was in fact a normal working day, as people only had Sunday off. From about 1910-1920 I've noticed more weddings taking place on Saturdays. Amanda |

Hello Ann I have heard of people being two places at once on the cencus. Was his wife with her parents too,could be they were still living with there parents even though married. Kindest regards Maureen |

Hi Ann Check and see if his wife is still with her parents on census. Maybe they couldn't afford a place of their own, and neither family had space for an extra person in the household. The day of the wedding is normal. In fact a lot of weddings took place on a Bank Holiday Monday as it was the only time they could get off work together. Saturday was a normal working day. I wouldn't take it for granted tha anyone actually spent the night there on census night. They may just have been there for the day or when the census guy visited. I have relatives who appear twice in the census - it may be mischeivousnous (that doesn't look right!) or perhaps just a misunderstanding on 'the rules' or even wishful thinking! It isn't inconceivable that a newlywed might be at their parents house a few days later - illness or whatever? |
