went there today!

Went and see my Rosie today.She went to Wolverly St School.She said it was a mixed school.All the young children had there own playground.The boys had there own playground and the girls had a playground on the roof.The girls were told not to go near the railings as all the boys kept looking up.She said the school is not there anymore. I have just looked up Cheshire St on my a-z. Cheshire St is on top of Turin St where my mum was born in 1929.My mother was adopted but all her 9 brothers and sisters stayed in the area.But sadly they have all died. One of mums brothers was born in 1927 and 1928.Cheshire St is not that far from Coventry St either,so i will ask my Rosie tomorrow of the nearest school to that road.She might of gone there to. No my dad wasn't academic, I dont think he was evacuated, he joined the army in 1945 at the age of 16 and I believe his sister was born in 1944 in the area. Your stars thanks very much, off to bed now, nite and bless

I was only talking to one of our elderly ladies yesterday that was born in Bethnal Green in1924 and only moved away 10 years ago.She lived in Coventry Street just off of Bethnal Green Road.I will ask her tomorrow what school she went to. Annie

As long as my camera's working I'll gladly take photo's of there for you. Most of the school buildings are old (Victorian to 1930's) . If I see one of my East London mates I'll ask them which schools are the most likely. Do you know if your Dad was academic or not? Did he stay in London during the war or was he evacuated? I know that a lot of children from this area were evacuated to all over England and Wales.

yes i googled cheshire street, can see the schools but it dosn't give their names, and i didn't know whether they would have been the same schools built in 1930's. Look forward to hearing from you when you have been for your walk in May, if its not too much trouble a piccie of a possible school and 5 & 8 cheshire street would be great if you have a digital camera. (Or am I being too cheeky)

Googling Cheshire Street +Bethnal Green on Google maps will show you where the street is and there are a lot of schools in the area. Also most of them have changed their names over the years, which doesn't help. I'll be with in a five minute walk of there next month, so I will wander down there and see if its still there.

It would probably be C of E if anything, But they were not particulary religious.

That would be fantastic, but unfortunately I have no idea, he never ever talked of his childhood and left the area at 16, to join the army, but he lived at No 8 Cheshire Street. The nearest school would probably be the one, I was wondering if I could guess the school I may perhaps be able to access school records, but doubt it online, and I cannot go myself, I live in Australia. A lot of the schools in Bethnal Green are on the Old Bethnal Green Road. The schools are still there but the names have changed. I've got to go there in May so if you know the street or any other info about exactly where he lived I could try and guess which one he went to.for you. Any clues at all, eg. colour of uniform, religion, mixed or single gendered would help as there's about 10 schools round there!
