Shirley - It is a bad image and the surname looks like Dixon to me - No John (possibly a James) & can't pick out Saddleworth or Index ref. (scratches head) It is a very useful tool to know about though - thanks. Reggie - yes I'm pretty sure it should be Saddleworth. Ah well back to the drawing board! but thanks for your help both. I have had a look and its a very bad picture, however the page doesnt even go up as far as J.s so its an error by the freebmd transcrber as you have found. Shirley |

It is obviously an error on the part of the freebmd transcriber...........if you go to the freebmd website, you can see his name, and add a comment, should you so wish. I have viewed the image on Ancestry, and there is no trace of a John Greaves having been registered in Saddleworth. Is Saddleworth the correct registration area for the birth you seek? Reg |

I found a birth index on Ancestry's Partial Indexes for John Greaves B. Jun qtr 1841 Saddleworth, and sent for the certificate. I have had an e-mail saying that there is no trace of the person named for the reference I supplied (which was Vol 23 page 365). Having checked Ancestry's Full indexes and 1837.com - he is not there but he is definatley on the Partial Indexe. When I checked who else was on that page, all the other births were in Leeds - he was the only one for Saddleworth. Does anyone have any ideas as to what has happened here? I have sent for shed loads of certificates but never come across this before. Many Thanks Angela |
