Ok another havent a clue question. Computer is very slow. If I empty my 'cookies' will I lose anything? thank you Marion

No you won't lose everything but if you have passwords, usernames saved so that they fill in automatically I'm not sure if they are stored in cookies, maybe someone else will know the answer to that Helena

Yes, cookies do store your username and passwords to sites. Do if you delete them, you will just have to re-enter the names/passwords for sites that usually log you in automatically (like this one). Sam x

do you defrag your PC on a regular basis and empty temporary Internet files etc. doing this will speed up your PC Shirley

The best way of handling all this is CCleaner This can be set to delete cookies and other crap without deleting the ones for your usual sites like this. Another thing, besides regular maintenance (ie emptying cookies, defragging, etc) that will speed up your PC is to turn off programs running in the background that you aren't using, An example of a few programs that are usually running in the background whether you are using them at the moment or not: printer, camera, scanner, etc....these programs, when installed, add themselves to your start up menu - you can usually tell if there are a lot of unnecessary items running by looking in your icon tray - the icons showing in the bottom right hand corner of your screen. If there are a lot of icons there, most of them can be prevented from starting up when you start up your PC. Judy

Forgot to add, do be careful when turning items off....if you are unsure of what something is, don't turn it off as you don't want to prevent a program from starting that your PC needs to work. If in doubt, ask or Google. Judy

I can remember in the early '90s we had to defrag our PC's at work almost weekly, or they ground to a halt. These days with giga size disks it is rarely necessary to defrag unless you regularly save and delete large files. However, this site in particular doesn't work properly if your internet cache is short of space - lots of problems with loading the tree are down to this, so do clear your internet temp files regularly, if you do nothing else.
