I am in Sydney Australia. Does anyone have a sensible suggestion to help with a dilemma? I can find ancestors on the A2A 1851 census records, surname KEEFFE, but I can NOT find them on the genes reunited 1851 census records. They were born in Ireland, but moved to England and then some of them migrated to New Zealand in 1865. How do I figure out which JOHN KEEFFE, or which ELLEN KEEFFE etc were the ones who migrated? Cheers, from this wonderful LAND DOWN UNDER.

Working from later times backwards, .... What do you know about the family regards children, parents, occupations etc? When you did find them in a census, which area was it? I had a quick look on Ancestry and saw that quite a few John KEEFFEs came to England from Ireland. We need to narrow them by age, etc. from later information. It might mean following several families forwards to eliminate them. Gwyn

The Keeffe family that I am interested in were: John Keeffe and his wife Ellen nee Donoghue and their children, Patrick, Michael, John, Julia and Ellen. The son JOHN was born about 1857, and they emigrated to Auckland NEW ZEALAND on The Armstrong leaving THE DOWNS in Nov 1864 and arriving Auckland Feb 1865. Family Oral history says the parents were a mixed religion marriage, and the Tipperary ancestor was Protestant and the Dublin ancestor was Catholic which was stressed as a double hinderance to those parents who eventually chose to emigrate rather than have their children treated as outcasts. BUT my question remains, why can I find them as KEEFFE on A2A and not on the genes reunited 1851 census records. If I am mis-reading the genes reunited records, PLEASE could someone help me to understand what I am doing wrong. Cheers, EAC, in the Land Down Under.

Hello Ellen, One of the most common reasons for not being able to find the same record in various sources of the same information is just mis-transcription. Please could you post the piece, folio and page numbers of the entry you've found on the A2A 1851 census, and then we can try looking in the GR records for you. :-) Chris
