I have a couple who married in London in the 1760s by licence. I suspect they may have come from Scotland. Does anyone know where to look for Scottish marriage licences.........Thanks.

The marriage I have is Thomas Cowan Isabella Laing 29th June,1766 - St. Marylebone. Its on the IGI, but I have a copy from the parish register stating by licence. All parties involved are Scottish names. witnesses Chisholm and Mckenzie. I haven't found a licence around the London area. Thanks for your replies.

Hi Sue What are you hoping to find from license? Julie

Julie I was hoping maybe a licence may give some indication of fathers names or maybe some other members of the families. I live in hopes.

Sue Do you have any idea of his age when he married? I have put Thomas Cowan into Scotlands People and it came up with 36 matches for the years 1720-1754. Julie

I took advantage of the free offer for Scotlands people last weekend and downloaded several images. One of Thomas' grandsons and his family alternated between London and Orkney through the censuses, so I think this is where the roots lie, but I can't prove it as yet. Thanks for looking. If its the right family I am looking at they seem to have been quite influential in Kirkwall Orkney and their house seems to be the local museum.
