Military Prisoner?

Please forgive my ignorance, but just discovered that a relative was a military prisoner, 1901, at a prison in Hampshire. What would this have been for any ideas? also which war? My political history is not good, enlightenment needed!! Christine |

It could simply have meant that he had committed some military offence and had been sent to the military prison - not necessarily whilst serving abroad at war, even. I think the Boer War was going on during 1901 in South Africa, but a soldier could easily have ended up in military jail whilst stationed at home - an offence such as getting drunk or insubordination and the like could get them into deep trouble. If you wanted to find out exactly what he had done wrong, you could try searching for his military records at the archives at Kew, which would record things like this. Regards Athena |
