I seem to do OK looking up ancestors on the various census' but how do I find information before that? I know there are parish records but what if you don't know which parish to look in? Any help or useful advice would be gratefully received!

hi, familyseach*org (change * for .) do have some records going back many years BUT they do need to be checked and verified and they are not always accurate. however they do give you a starting block to work from. amy

Sometimes (in fact, a lot of the time) when you look on the census images, two parishes will be mentioned. One is the civil parish, the other is the ecclesiastical parish - which I think is referring to the nearest church in the locality. It's not foolproof - a lot of my Catholic ones have the parish given as the nearest Church of England one (I think C of E ranked higher in importance than Catholic) but it gives you an idea.

If you give us one or two ancestors you wish to trace, perhaps we can show you using them as examples. I'd be happy to look for you.
