My ancestor is on the 1841 census and in the occupation box it says Ind. Does anyone know what this means ? Cheers Marie x |

Could mean he has independant means - i.e. he's well off enough not to have to work! |

I hate to throw aspersions - but quite often Ind also meant they were on parish relief in certain areas! Normally though it means someone who is living on unearned income - eg, a pension, annuity etc. |
