My ancestor is on the 1841 census and in the occupation box it says Ind. Does anyone know what this means ? Cheers Marie x

Could mean he has independant means - i.e. he's well off enough not to have to work!

Just found this on google. Jenny 1841 CENSUS OF SCOTLAND -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- County of Aberdeen, District of Alford, Parish of Glenbucket -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enumeration District 3 ABBREVIATIONS:Ind.-independant, Ag. I hate to throw aspersions - but quite often Ind also meant they were on parish relief in certain areas! Normally though it means someone who is living on unearned income - eg, a pension, annuity etc.
