I have James Butcher marrying Betsey Wickham @ St Mary Newington in 1827. James was born in Thatcham in Berkshire but his family come from villages in that area. My problem is that there are two Elizabeth Wickhams born in 1806 within a couple of months that could be his bride. One born in Southwark near where the marriage took place and the other born in East Lockinge, Berkshire the same area that James came from. I've a copy of the parish register entry for the marriage, both bride and groom are 'of thisParish' and one of the witnesses is a Wickham but the christian name is illegible and doesn't seem to fit with any siblings of either possible bride. Is there any way that I don't know of that could help me decide which Betsey is the right one? Sue

on the LDS site, there are 2 elizabeths listed. do either of them's parents match yours? marriage certs aren't available for that time are they? it may mean a treck to the parish to see if there is any other info listed in the parish records.

Hi Yummy Sorry I've not been back - had to cook dinner then lost control of the 'puter! As I said, I've got the parish record entry of the marriage - no parents listed, they don't usually as far as I know so until I can be certain which Elizabeth he married I can't find out her parents name! If you want to try and work out the witness name pm me with your email address and I'll scan a copy of the record to you but I don't know how well it will work - these old records tend not to copy too well. Might not be around until tomorrow now, cheers, Sue x

Were either of the Elizabeth's alive in 1841 or 1851, for you to be able to know their birthplace? If either of them married after 1837, their father should be shown. I was able to confirm who was the father of a Jane JONES, b, abt 1807, through her 2nd marriage certificate. Gwyn

Thats another part of the mystery! In 1841 they were living in Lambeth, Surrey and both James and Betsey are listed as being not born in that county. In 1851 still living in Lambeth, James place of birth is Thatcham Berks and Betsey's Lambeth Surrey! I have wondered if the first Betsey died and he married another one - in fact I sent off for a death cert dated 1849 but it wasn't her! James went on to outlive Betsey and remarried in 1860's Sue
