Hi Kevin What date was the birth ? Was it post 1912 ? If so then the Maiden name will be recorded in the index. Otherwise you will have to look for Census or Marriage records. Is your Gt Grandfather the oldest ? This may give you a lead on the marriage??? Cheers...Paul

maybe look at census - if you have the childs name & fathers name & occupation you may be able to match the names up on a census around that time. If you want to give the details some one may be able to help

They are in Cottage Homes for Elham Union, so I think this would be some sort of workhouse. Everyone living here apart from staff, would be classed as inmates. ED, institution or vessel just means the people on the page are either in a particular Enumeration District, or institution or on a boat or ship (the name will be given on the page) when the census was taken. Your family were in Enumeration District (ED) 12. Kath. x

Kevin If you would like me to check any parish registers for that time, send a personal message direct to me. I live in the area and know there are copies on film at the library. If you want Hythe addresses checked, I can do that. Much of the older part of the town is unchanged. Gwyn

I've just looked at the family in 1891. The Cottage Homes are in Horn Street, Cheriton ( Tesco is now opposite at the top of this narrow road) There is still a residential home in that street, so it may be that building. The workhouse proper was in Elham. I will ask about this at the local library. Gwyn
