Thanks Athena, as I thought. The irritating thing is, I thought I found him earlier on the Post Office Directory - the address was Stables, etc. etc. Now, for the life of me, I can't find it again. M. Steer |

Hi Margaret I have a whole branch of my ancestors who were grooms, cab drivers, omnibus drivers, omnibus proprietors etc. Yes, in 1901 he would have been driving a horse-driven cab. He would more than likely have worked for a company - if he worked for himself, the census would usually have stated this. In the case of my ancestors they began their careers working for other people, eventually working their way up to owning their own omnibus company and then when the horses went out of fashion my grt grandad took on a fleet of motorised cabs. You'll find quite a bit of information online if you Google words such as omnibus or Hackney Cabs etc. Hope that's helped Athena |

May I have your opinions please. The 1901 Census gives the occupation of a (extremely elusive) relative as Cabdriver. Beside that is written (in another hand and pen) Groom, which has been crossed through. I realise that at that time there were very few motor vehicles. Would I be wrong in thinking this man worked with horses. Also would a Cabdriver work for himself or for a company. Many thanks, M. Steer |
