Hi Kath, I have seen this one before, but on the three census returns i have he states clearly born in roade - could he just change where he was born to match the rest of his siblings? vicky

I would think that by the time he was old enough to think about it he would just assume that's where he was born. It looks like he was born in a workhouse. Kath. x

thanks, i wondered if that was what the building was. there are so many clarke's in that area its possible she did later marry william clarke - could explain it. thanks vicky one last thought - could a family be in the workhouse, but not the father? forget that bit, just looked at full census and mother is listed as widow - think this might be my george, and william is actually step-father? vicky

The family weren't in the workhouse - it's just that George was born there. They were also used as maternity hospitals and infirmaries. Kath. x

Could this be George in 1871? The age is a bit out but Wootton is quite close to Roade. Sometimes people just gave the name of the nearest well known place to their actual birthplace. Name: George Clarke Age: 15 Estimated birth year: abt 1856 Relation: Boarder Gender: Male Where born: Woolton, Northamptonshire, England Civil parish: Roade Town: Roade County/Island: Northamptonshire Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Disability: View image Registration district: Hardingstone Sub-registration district: Milton ED, institution, or vessel: 4 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 166 Household Members: Name Age George Clarke 15 - boarder William Clarke 8 - boarder William Widdows 73 Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece: 1479; Folio: 69; Page: 27 Kath. x
