I've found a marriage in the Parish Records today (the originals on microfiche) for Michael WORTHINGTON and Charlotte Pedley. It is also on familyhistoryonline, 17 April 1835 in Cheddleton, Staffs. And the marriage is there but it is a member submission and says Withington (and they've got the date wrong). Now I saw the Parish Records today and it was definately Worthington! On 1842 census, they are listed as Michael Worthington, 39, Ag Lab Charlotte, 20 Michael, 3 Clement, 2 Joseph Pedley, 30 (Charlotte's brother). Living in Cheddleton, Staffs. I can't find them in 1851. In 1861, I have found Clement listed as WITHINGTON, with his wife Charlotte. in 1871 again I have found Clement WITHINGTOn with wife Charlotte. I know that there can be various spellings of a surname but to me, Worthington and Withington are 2 seperate names! Would it change like this do you think? There is also a baptism on the IGI for Michael Withington on Cheddleton that fits. Also, can anyone find anything of Michael or Charlotte after 1841? Thanks Sam x

Well, Worthington and Withington sound very similar to me! OC

Thanks both of you - I was going cross eyed looking at the census but I was looking for Worthington and not Withington! It has totally thrown me having a different name, I have come across different spellings of the same name before (Limer/Lymer and Poyzer/Poyser) but not a completely different name! Sam x

It's amazing what you can find when you are looking for the right name... Have found a remarriage for Charlotte Withington / Pedley in 1861 so Michael must have died.

Depends on your accent I suppose, but I can certainly see how one could be confused with the other. OC
