My Great Grandmother, ( a woman, the more I find out about, the more I admire) left my great grandfather with a toddler and pregnant with her second and moved from Lancashire back to Staffordshire, she had a surrogate child for a couple and then kept the baby, met and fell in love and lived in sin for at least 15 years with a man who she had 5 children with, finally marrying him in 1922, unfortunately he died a year later. Very common indeed :-) |

yes kathleen i will widen my search. i've been told that lillie's father was a bit of a tyrant so i just can't believe she'd be having children out of wedlock! chris |

She might have been respectable....or just fibbing. I have seen several birth certificates like that.It would suggest a marriage, where there wasn't necessarily one to find. My great grandmother's 2nd marriage proved hard to find although she was 'married' in the 1891 census, with another 3 daughters , all registered in her 2nd husband's name. They married in 1892. I have similar birth certificates where the parents 'appear' to be married. I know this to be untrue as I have the marriage certificate which was 10 years later. You need to widen your search for the marriage, as it could be many years after the children were born. Kath. x |

I am trying to find the marriage cert for Lillie mary powell and Charles Henry curzon. They were both born in madeley shropshire and are both with their parents on 1891 census. Their first childwas born 1895 and they appear together in 1901. I have searched on ancestry 1890 -1901 and just can't understand why i can't find it.were they living in sin ??? another pair of eyes would be much appreciated thanks chris |
