Hi I've just received a death certificate for the year of 1898. It states that the deceased was a four year old boy who died of Bronchial Pneumonia. However, underneath it says ' Natural Death' and underneath that has the letters PM and underneath that says 'about 9 days'. Can somebody explain to me what those extra items underneath Broncial Pneumonia means? Many thanks Lyndsey

PM means that there was a post mortem and it was decided that he died of natural causes. The 9 days, means that he had been treated for this by the doctor for about 9 days before his death. Kath. x

Thanks Kath, sorry for the delay in thanking you, had to nip to the vet with poorly moggie! Yes, it does indeed say on the death certificate that an inquest was held. Although I don't understand why there should have been a post mortem - do you have any theories? Thanks again Lyndsey

There was probably a pm because, although he was being treated by a doctor, for bronchitis, he was not expected to die, and his death was a mysterious one, as far as the doctor was concerned. The verdict of natural causes means it wasn't the bronchitis as such which killed him. OC
