Born where in Staffs? Maybe his father died between 1842 and 1851 and the one you have the birth cert for is not the right one? When you say there is no parish record, where have you looked? Every church in the surrounding area? He may not have been baptised as a baby he could have been older, also not everybody was baptised. Sam x

1842 was very early in the registration process..........many births were not registered, as it wasn't compulsory until 1875. Reg

This looks likely to be the marriage of the aunt & uncle, so it would seem that the connection with them would be through Henry's mother........... JOEL BALL HAMBLETON Male Marriages: Spouse: ELIZABETH BETTANEY Marriage: 31 DEC 1836 All Saints, Dilhorne, Stafford, England Reg

Sue in Somerset

Sue in Somerset Report 26 Apr 2007 01:00

We always need to remember that a place of birth may not be where someone is either registered or baptised! My great grandmother was born in Cornwall while her father was working there but she wasn't baptised for several years until they came back to Somerset. The parents then had three children done at once. I hunted records in and around Falmouth, Cornwall for ages! I have just bought a birth certificate for someone who was born in May but not registered until the end of December! He was registered in the same place but I can imagine it would have been easy to have a different place if his parents had moved. If all you know is a place of birth from a census then you could even be looking in the wrong county for a parish record of a baptism. You might be months or years out too. Sue

PM received from Sharon...... copying for general info......... hi reg,yes this the henry i am interested in,as you can see he was living with his aunt & uncle in 1851 & 1861,by 1871 he was married to sarah ball, which i know is correct,on his 2 marriage certs his fathers name is thomas mitchell(butler).on the birth cert that i have it lists his fathers name as james mitchell(servant),his mothers name is mary mitchell nee bettaney, which fits in with his aunt elizabeth hambleton nee bettaney.i have searched 1841 census for his parents but i can't find them.a visit to staffs record office didn't help.any suggestions as to solve this mystery?sharon

Following your PM, Sharon, I would think you need to try to find the marriage of Mary and Mr Mitchell........it may be that he had two forenames, which would explain the differences on the certs...... Reg
