do you have to pay to view these and what info do they give - have never looked before

You can get the 1881 census index for free on Ancestry or Familysearch sites, the others you have to pay for. They tell you the names of everyone living in a household, their relationships to each other, ages, marital status, occupation and birth place. The 1841 is slightly different, the ages are rounded up/down to the nearest 5 years, there is no relationships and place of birth is just 'Born in the county?' yes or no, Sam x
