I am trying to help a friend... She sent for the death certificate of Sarah Ellen BELCHAMBERS, 49 who died in Walsall Registration district in 1898...... She was the wife of Nathaniel Edward BELCHAMBERS, '..a chandelier maker of Walsall'..... We still don't know who they are..... Please can you help to find them / him in 1891 and 1901 ?

My friend is a registered researcher with G.O.O.N.S. and has gradually 'got to know' the various family groups. Not knowing who Sarah Ellen was...... She is out of area for most with that surname, who were largely in the south / southeast, my friend wanted to know who Sarah was. There is no birth, marriage or death logged on GRO for a Nathaniel Edward BELCHAMBERS. Sarah died in the workhouse, and Nathaniel was not the informant. Could they have muddled the records and given Sarah the wrong surname?... Far fetched, I know but the cert. has been no help at all. Gwyn

Does seem odd there is no trace of him - would there be any surviving workhouse records - or trade directories in Walsall. Gail. x

There have not been that many Nathaniels ever with that surname. Those that carried that given name did generally have trades and it seems very strange that the Nathaniel that we know of, was in that general area... and had a very similar occupation. Even if Sarah Ellen had been shown as the wife of Nathaniel Joseph...where would that leave Julia? All very odd. Maybe workhouse records are the only way forward on this.....but what information will I be looking for..or find.. that is different.? Gwyn
