Is the father described as a widower? If so, your best approach would be to try to find the marriage, and then look for a possible death.........unless the son's birth was registered............... Reg

Actually, I've just looked at the image.........John Thomas is described as Daughter's son......so he was the illegitimate son of Martha (one assumes). So, it's the father whose identity you will probably never know................ Reg

on the 1861 census as i said he is listed as grandson - father joseph on the trnascribed list but yes on the actually image it says daughters, does this mean that martha and jospeph could be the parents: 1861 England Census about John Thos Crockford Name: John Thos Crockford Age: 4Mo Estimated birth year: abt 1860 Relation: Grandson Father's name: Joseph Gender: Male Where born: Denver, Norfolk, England Civil parish: Denver Ecclesiastical parish: Fincham County/Island: Norfolk Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: View image Registration district: Downham Sub-registration district: Downham ED, institution, or vessel: 5

No.....it means that he is Martha's illegitimate son............as proved by the 1871 census. 1861 census image does not say that his father is Joseph (that is an inaccurate assumption by the Ancestry transcriber)........John is the grandson of the head of the household (Elizabeth). Every person in a house on any census is listed by his/her relationship to the head, and not to any other family member. And I doubt very much whether you would want John to be the product of a relationship between siblings!!!!!!! Reg
