Windows 98 is no longer supported by Microsoft, as it is by now three versions behind the latest release, Windows Vista. This could be why BT are reluctant to help. We had the same problem at work running Windows NT (essentially the commercial version of Windows 98) and had to do emergency installs of Windows 2000 on the PC's that were failing to work properly. Hopefully they should be all up to XP by the end of the year. You will seriously have to think about an upgrade at some point as you are likely to find increasingly more software won't run properly. Good luck in the short term - hope the suggestions keep you ticking over. |

Hi On Windows 98 SE you can go to Start then Run then type in SFC and clock on OK. This will look to see if you have a corrupt programme. You ought to have either your Windows disc orcheck you have afile called win98 on your hard drive first as if/when corrupt files are found SFC will ask to reload an uncorrupted version. Windows 98 was a bit inclined to get corrupted. Clive |

Sorry got to nudge this up. No problems since the 30th April except for Script error messages the last couple of days. Last night when closing down browser windows, before logout from internet and shutting down computer, got the YBrowser message again. Could not delete/close the YBrowser message. In fact could do nothing but switch the computer off at the plug with the obvious result of it running scandisk when I switched it on this morning. Any one got any ideas please Maureen |

Oh dear I have no knowledge of browsers whatsoever. I really need to make sure that whatever I do that I do not make the situation any worse. There are several problems that have occured since upgrading to broadband that BT are unable and unwilling to sort out - their help desk is in India - and they do not have a clue. It was actually their fault in the first place that started a long chain of events off. Very long story. How do I make sure that which ever browser I download will be compatiable with my setup? Hi Glitter Babe Must agree with Old Mick Braddock. Occasionally my windows internet explorer goes AWOL so I then just use Mozzilla Firefox browser, its faster and more reliable. Simon |

Take other advice first but if you get stuck think about using another browser. I have both IE and Mozilla Firefox installed but find the latter far easier and more stable. If you go for it make sure you download just the browser without the google toolbar. |

Bob, Thanks for the suggestion. I know how to remove a program but where would I find Messenger to reinstall it? Maureen |

The ybrowser messages refer to y a h o o messenger so you could try uninstalling that first. Bob |

Sue, BT mucked up the whole installation and I had to have an engineer call to sort it out. Trouble is that he altered a few settings to the Broadband installation to get it to work on Windows 98SE so I am a bit worried about having to reinstall that if I have to. There are other problems which BT are refusing to help with saying that I would have to pay £75 for their engineer to come out. Maureen |

Only thing I can think of is to try and uninstall the browser - it used to give you the option to uninstall or repair but I dont know if it still does that. Dont you just hate when a broadband supplier takes over the computer and mucks up all your settings. Sue |

Nothing but problems since upgrading to Broadband about 3 months ago. I am now getting YBrowser and YPager error messages - saying about an illegal operation - so it shuts down the browser windows. Was bad last week when I even had trouble just starting up the computer getting frequent error messages and at one stage even being told to reinstall Windows. I am running on Windows 98 Second Edition. Have no idea how to reinstall Windows if I have to do that or what to do about the YBrowser messages. Is this something I can sort out myself? Any suggestions would be welcome as I do not know if the two problems are connected. Obviously if I do not reply for sometime you will know I am having problems again Maureen |
