I have read the thread about Irish records but I'm still confused lol. I'm trying to search for details on my gggrandparents but have very little info to go on. My ggrandad died in 1960 and it states he was 88 so I have been looking for a birth around 1872. I have no idea what his parents names were but think his dad may have been Michael as he was Patrick Michael O'Sullivan. He had a farm in Ballydesmond Co.Cork but as that's so near the border to Kerry I cant be sure he or his ancestors were born there. No one else in the family has any further info so can anyone advise how I could find ggrandads birth? The family were catholic so would that make a difference in where to search/contact? Thanks Sam

Sam Just went on google to see which district Ballydesmond was in. You might need to bear in mind the following when undertaking your research: Ballydesmond is a small rural parish with a population of around 900 people. It is in the diocese of Kerry but more than half the parish is in Co. Cork because the river Blackwater, which seperates the two counties, rises in the parish and flows by the village. Until then 1930's the parish and village were known as Kingwilliamstown. The locals decided the drop the old name and re-name the place Ballydesmond. The new name was chosen because of the association with the Earl of Desmond. Karen

Yep that's one of my problems that the diocese is Kerry even though the village is Cork!!! I may have to find the marriage entry for Patrick as I know that must be around 1913 as my nan was born November 1913.

Do you have any knowledge of his whereabouts at the time of the 1901 or 1911 census? - whether he would have been in England or in Ireland at that time?

Occasionally, the IGI comes up trumps with Irish research, and I have just had a look at it for Patrick O'Sullivan - there is a Patrick O'Sullivan born 27th October 1872, son of Michael and Julia Nil

Nudging - in case Patrick O'Sullivan born 27th October 1872 could be the correct one.

Thanks for all your help guys :) I was under the impression that it was quite common for the son to have the fathers name as his second name so I think that Joy's entry of a Michael O'Sullivan with Julia Nil is probably the best bet. One of Patrick's daughters is called Julia so that's another point for tha one. Patrick was in Ireland for 1901 and 1911 census. As far as i know he never left the county in his life!!! I'm waiting for my mum's cousin to come back to me with any details that she may have been able to get from great uncle but I'm not hopeful. Thanks again for your help.
