Thanks for your replies. I have always found the local RO helpful, which is why I use them. I always send a SAE. The Berwick office has even done searches for me, without my asking, As was suggested, I will ring a RO, the first time I use them Anne

Since I live in Canada, I am unable to send a SAE with UK stamps on it ....................... so I have to add an extra £1 when I apply to a register office. Therefore, a certificate costs me a total of £8. Plus, at times, I've had to go to the bank and get a money order (mor charges!) 'cos they wouldn't accept a credit card. GR only charges me the £7, no extra postage, and accept a credit card! Guess where I apply now?? It really is, I think, a matter of personal preference ............... the certificate you get from GRO is a reduced-in-size photocopy or download of the original certificate as filled in by GRO at the time of registration. The certiifcate from an individual register office is a full size certificate filled in by a modern-day clerk from the certificate on record........... and can be subject to that person's interpretation of old handwriting. Hi Anne, Here's what it says on the Cumbria County Council website: ========== Increase in copy certificate fees: Please note that from the 1st April 2007, all copy birth, death & marriage certificates that are posted to customers and/or paid for by credit/debit card, with require an administration fee of £0.50p per certificate. This is to cover postage and charges to process credit/debit card transactions. ========== Many register offices request a SAE when you order a certificate from them, and many still want payment by cheque, so I can see where they're coming from, but it would be nice to have the option! I haven't seen this sort of thing before. Chris

The GRO standard charge is £7.00 but I suppose that individual register offices can charge what they like. The one in Stoke on Trent still only charge £7. Sam x

I ordered 2 death certificates from a Cumbria record office, and was told that Cumbria charge £7.50 from 1.4.07. Has anyone else come across this? Is the standard charge still £7 per certificate? Thanks Anne
