Angela now in Wilts (not North Devon) | Report | 2 May 2007 18:26 |
Hi For elimination purposes, I suspect that this is the Amy that Reg found earlier. sister Mabel's birthplace was given as Kennington, the same as Amy Elsmore in 1891. I haven't been able to find the married Beatrice Amy in 1901 though! Employers of servants werent always very good at remembering where they were born, even if they ever knew, so I wouldnt discount Reggie's find on the strength of the birthplace being wrong. OC |

I don't know that she married an Elsmore. On her daughter's birth certificate it states her former name as Elsmore. So I presumed that was her maiden name. She is by then married to George Sedgwick. Birmingham Registry office cannot find a birth for Amy Elsmore or a marriage for an Amy Elsmore. I just thought she might be Amy ? married to an Elsmore. |

What makes you think she was married to an Elsmore? The word formerly is usually written for a maiden name on a birth certificate. Ozi. |

I've tried every combination of names. She was born in Aston according to the 1901 census. She always lived in or around Aston. Her daughter was born there and also my father her grandson. |

Pamela, what makes you so certain that Amy was born in Aston, Birmingham? It may well be that she never married George because she was already married. Have you tried looking for a marriage between 'somebody' Elsmore and Amy 'somebody'? M. Steer |

Yes, Reg I've also come across this one but I think my Amy was born in Aston in Birmingham. George was serving in the Tower of London with his regiment. But there doesn't appear to be a marriage for a Geroge Sedgwick to Amy Elsmore anywhere. |

Amy is the name on the census and on Beatrice birth certificate and also her death certificate. I'm thinking that perhaps she married very young and Elsmore is her married name by a previous husband. |

I keep coming back to this girl..........as George was in London in 1891, it could explain how they met............... Name: Amy Elsmore Age: 17 Estimated birth year: abt 1874 Relation: Servant Gender: Female Where born: Kennington, London, England Civil parish: Chelsea Ecclesiastical parish: St John County/Island: London Country: England Registration district: Chelsea Sub-registration district: Chelsea, South ED, institution, or vessel: 13b Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Kate E Berchem 29 Sidney G Berchem 1 William J Berchem 5 William M Berchem 29 Amy Elsmore 17 Arthur Ovenshire 25 William Wilson 21 Reg |

Certainly her marriage (if there was one) would be registered, as that is done by the person who performs the ceremony. I was referring to her birth........... Reg |

Could Amy be short for something else - we have an Amy whose full name was Ann Marie. There is an Alice Marie on freeBMD, but I don't think it fits. If Amy is a pet name it could be advisable to extend your search. It's puzzling because there aren't that many Elsmores. |

Her name on the 1901 was Amy Sedgwick wife of George and mother of Beatrice, my grandmother. I have George's army records and he was unmarried when discharged in 1891, so I would guess they would have married between 1891 and and when Beatrice was born in 1894. On Beatrice's birth certificate her name was Amy Sedgwick formerly Elsmore. |

Reggie She would have married about 1894 so I would think her marriage, if one took place, would have been registered. |

I've been trying to find either the birth or marriage of my gr grandmother. I have tried here before and received good advice, followed all of them up but still no luck. On my grandmother's birth certificate here mother is stated as Amy Sedgwick formerly Elsmore. I have her death certificate which states she would have been born in 1870 this is also confirmed on the 1901 census. According to that census she was born in Aston in Birmingham, she spent all her life in that area. I've had a search done at Birmingham Registry Office but they cannot find a birth or marriage record for Amy Elsmore. Of course she may have married before she married George. I don't know what to do next as I been through all the usual searches. Can anyone suggest my next step please. Pam |
