Been trying to find the parents of my 4xg grandfather Henry Budd Henry gives his birthplace as Newton, Hamps (Presumably Newton Valence) on 1841-61 census. From them and his death cert he doesn't seem sure f his age but birth year is between 1787-90 at latest. No trace on the IGI so I decided to type in Budd and Newton to see if any possible siblings on the census and got following 1851 census: Thomas Budd b. 1795/6 Newton Valence, Hamps (Spouse Harriett) 1861 census John Budd b.1799/1800 Newton, Hamps (Spouse Charlotte) 1871 census Benjamin Budd b.1789/90 Newton Valence, Hamps Thomas Budd b.1797/8 Newton Valence, Hamps (Spouse Harriett) And in 1841 only Budds in Newton Valence Henry Budd abt 1771 Hampshire, England Newton Valence Hampshire Mary Budd abt 1771 Hampshire, England Newton Valence Hampshire So from that I'm guessing a Henry and Mary Budd, both born around 1770, marrying around 1786-90, and then having (at least) four sons, Henry, Benjamin, Thomas and John.

Now here's the tricky bit. (sorry this is a bit longwinded, but bare with me). Got a marraige for a Henry Budd and a Martha Browning Apr 13 1789 Chawton, Hamps. Ok Martha not Mary, (but perhaps interchangeable?). Date is about right and Chawton is just north of Newton Valence, about 3 miles. Martha was born 1866 Chawton, so possibly marrying in brides parish, rather than where they live. Googled and got this: From 'Letters of Jane Austen to her sister Cassandra Austen, 1811' Chawton: Thursday (June 6). 'Mrs. Budd died on Sunday evening. I saw her two days before her death, and thought it must happen soon. She suffered much from weakness and restlessness almost to the last. Poor little Harriot seems truly grieved. You havenever mentioned Harry; how is he? With love to you all, Yours affectionately, J. A Googled further and a note from the Deirdre LeFaye edition of Jane Austen`s letters says this: 'Possibly Martha, nee Browning, wife of Henry Budd of Newton Valence, the neighbouring parish to Chawton. A John Budd was vestryman of Chawton Church in 1748.' Great I thought confirmed, Marthas husband was indeed from Newton Valence according to that..and g-g-g-g granny had famous connections..lol However....have checked the burial records, and the Mrs Budd Jane was writing about, died 4 Jun 1811 was almost certainly this one, Elizabeth Budd buried 7 Jun 1811 Parish Alton . I personally cannot see how Elizabeth/Martha can be in anyway interchangeable. Plus Henry has a wife Mary with him in 1841 (though admittably he could have remarried) Had my detective hat on all day trying to solve this one, but am feeling a bit stumped where to go now, any fresh opinions on the above most welcome.

Henry Budd born 1787-91 B.Newton Hamps Married Apr 12 1830 to Harriet Wilkes East Tisted, Hamps 11 children born 1830-52 all East Tisted. Died 1870 (age given 83) East Tisted Lived most of his life at Plain Farm, East Tisted, part of the Rotherfield Estate owned by the Scott family, and was an Ag Labourer. Unfortunately that's all I know about him. Apparantly there is a photo of Benjamin Budd, who I think may be his brother, in Alton Museum.
