Ooops - no, you're probably right, Linda. Sorry, not concentrating, am I? Not sure if she'd have had a baby in her fifties. Oh pain - just when I thought that was going to be a way through the brick wall for you. Sorry! ps - also just noticed that Charles was not born in that same county. Looks like it says 'I' in the box at the side, doesn't it? Oh well, that's not helping you ...

Nothing doing for Charles anywhere near that date.

I thought they were too old for him to be a son, rather grandson. What a good idea to look him up, thanks

Linda - yes, some people did marry years after having children. By the way, I've just checked the 1841 Census and found your Stoate family - and notice that they have a 3yr old son, Charles - so he was probably born after 1837 when registration first started. Have you tried searching for his birth record yet? If you are lucky enough to find it, the cert will give you his mother's maiden name! Then you will be able to search for a specific marriage using her full name. Athena

Well, at least we know we are dealing with Somerset people - so with that in mind, further on from that marriage entry that someone found above - this could be the christening entry of the same chap: THOMAS STOTT 06 JAN 1788 Wookey, Somerset, England Father - Matthew Mother - Mary Lyde Regards Athena

Was it common in those days to marry after the birth of children?

Linda - they may not have married in Combe Florey. If we assume that they were both born in Somerset then I think you need to widen your search for their marriage. They may have married in another nearby parish - or if they were like my ancestors (who married in Bristol but had their children in London), they may have moved miles away after marrying, so they could have come from any area, really. Were either of them still alive for the 1841 census? If so, what ages and birthplaces are given? Remember also that when searching the IGI and other records, that the surname may not necessarily have been spelt as Stoate - look for variations, such as Stoat and Stott. Best wishes Athena

Thanks Athena, they are on the 1841, but it only gives birthplace as Somerset.

No I hadn't come across that one. However, I had just begun to wonder if the spelling might have been changed. How can i find out if it is them?
