Hi ,i have managed to find a way to get to the hertfordshire archives on friday ,just what info can i find out from the parish records? Will i be able to get the mothers or fathers name from them when the person i'm looking for was baptised, if they were that is? He is being very elusive i'm afraid. (I posted his name yesterday and others tried but they had no luck either) Tina

You should find the father's name at least, and probably both parents' names. The earlier the record, the greater the chance of just the father's name being given. All the records I found recently at Huntingdon Record Office had at least one parent, and generally both, and also in most cases the date of birth.

Not sure which dates you will be looking at but by c.1812 there were standard forms to be filled in on the parish register of baptisms. They should show date of baptism Both parent's names, Address ( often very vague though on the early ones) Father's occupation Child's given names Sometimes you will have a vicar adding date of birth. After 1837, marriage forms on parish registers are identical to certificates received from GRO, with the same information. Gwyn

the christening record normally states the childs name the son/daughter of etc, sometimes if you are lucky it even gives the home address in the late 1800 s onwards. Dont think it does in the earlier records tho Shirley

Thank you it all sounds promising wasn't born very early 1900ish i think. However i cannot find his birth. We have found one 1892 , but unsure if its him, really we don't think its him as two others have him in their tree but not his son.So it seems he might be somewhere else, gawd knows where that is? I think this is too early for our man,mum seems to think it might be because he probably went to war and then married late. Anything might have happen but after contacting two other i'm sure that one(1892)isn't ours, lol. Tina

Have you got your man's marriage certificate? That would give his father's name and occupation. You need this information really before trying to find the birth. Gwyn
