Hi Bacardi I recently sent off for my grandfathers records. They sent me forms to fill in where you have to give as much info as possible (ideally their service number, or at least their date of birth) so I would suggest that you try and get your great grandfathers birth date pinned down so at least you can put this info on the forms. You will also need an idea when he would have served so that you know which address to write to. The forms say that it can take 6 months to get the information, but mine came through in a few weeks - although there was not much content to the records there is still enough to keep me going for a while! Check out http://www.army.mod.uk/contacts/divisions/records.htm to get the addresses. Good luck! Jo

It sounds as though he didn't serve after WW1. If this is the case, his records, if they survive, will be at the National Archives. It would be a long search to find him, in view of his common name. There would be several films to look through.

Have you tried putting his name into the London Gazette Archives? I have found quite a bit of info there. Frances
