After being a workaholic for the last 2 years and not looking at my family history for some time I want to get back into it again as I am on maternity leave and already bored! However, its been such a long time that I have forgotten which are the best websites etc. Is there a site now that we can download marriage ,birth, death certs from or do we have to still send off for them? What website would people recommend for the most info, best value for money subscriptions etc? Many thanks Lisa

You can view the births, marriages, deaths, GRO index FREE on Ancestry You still have to send for certificates, if the event wasn't in Scotland. I subscribe to Ancestry. Once paid up, one can view census etc. any time day or night, as frequently as you want to. Gwyn

I have subscriptions with Ancestry and findmypast - the latter was very useful in the early days, especially as BMD wasn't on ancestry and I was needing certificates all the time. Now I'm further back I use findmypast less and less and will probably cancel the sub soon. Ancestry is the one I use constantly!

Many thanks for your advice everyone. Will have a look at ancestry as most of u use this. I expect I won't have quite so much time on my hands soon but its nice to have something else to switch my brain onto. Lisa
