Military Medal Holders WW1

Relative was awarded posthumously in early 1919 the Military Medal. This MM is not even after his name on local War Memorial and his branch of the family has died out. I thought all medals awarded were listed in London Gazette but just tried on line and not so - how do I find out what action this medal was awarded for? Thank you. |

Hi Chris, Have you found his service medal card on the National Archives website? This medal card should have all the details of the medals he was awarded, and the National Archives website gives full details to explain what these medals were awarded for, and what they would have looked like. I believe I went on there some time ago but what I am looking for are the details of action leading to the award. I understood they were published in the Gazette but details of MM not available on line - Victoria Cross, Military Cross are. Have written again to the Regimental Museum and hoping this time someone may answer my question but I was hoping I could find details elsewhere as they were not helpful last time. Thannk you for trying. |

Chris The medal cards for the Military Medal awarded during the period 1914-20 are on microfiche and should be at the National Archives. I know because I used to work with the original cards! The MM card should have the London Gazette date on it. If that doesn't work then try the Index to the London Gazette, which should give you the year, volume and page number. Be advised that there are no formal citations published in the LG. The LG entry just consists of a general preambe along the lines of 'His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to approve the award of the Military Medal to ...' followed by a long list of recipients. If there is no card or nor LG entry then no award was made. Good luck with your search. Andrew |
