Can anyone help ? I want to trace my family back further than 1817, which is the earliest DOB I have found to date, but am not sure how to go about it. I know this ancestor was born in Tanfield, Durham and his mothers name was Sarah. Have looked on Durham Register office website, but they only hold files from 1837 on. I am assuming I will have to go to Durham but don't know where to start. Nadine Thomas |

Registration started in 1837.......before that, the only records were parish registers. Some of them have been transcribed on the LDS website, but the info has to be treated with caution. The 'extracted' records are generally more reliable than 'member submitted' info........... www.familysearch.org Reg |

Reggie, Yes, family search is where I got the info from. It matches up with the marriage info for his spouse so am assuming that it's right, but it only gives his name, date of christening and his mothers christian name. Nadine |

What is his name? The fact that there is no father's name listed suggests that he was illegitimate. When did he marry? If it was after 1837 you should buy his marriage certificate to see if there is a father mentioned on that. Sam x |

Nadine The Durham County Record Office seem to have the records you wanted. If you google Tanfield Parish Registers the second main listing, Durham County Council-Record Office-Tanfield, takes you straight to details of what they hold. Good luck Chris |

Sam, His name was Jonathon Richardson, and he married Mary Ann Gribbin in Whitehaven in gues what 1836 !!! Hence I'm now finding it difficult |

Chris and Eileen, Tried that, it seems that there is a gap in Tanfield records. you can get up to 1809 or after 1837 online - just my luck!! Anyway, there is some indication that there may be some merged parish records available so I'll follow that one up. Nadine |

You could always try the Joiner Marriage Index, it is pre 1837 and is for Northern England and Hertfordshire. I checked and it has approx 101 parishes from Durham. |
